Top Chicago cop rips his critics, defends role

Police Supt. Jody Weis wants no part of "business as usual"

CHICAGO — Police Supt. Jody Weis mounted a defiant defense of his reputation in a letter to the Sun-Times this weekend, saying he does not want the department to go back to "business as usual."

The superintendent was hired after a series of scandals eroded public trust in the Police Department. Now, Weis' reign is almost certain to end when Mayor Daley steps down in March. On Wednesday, thousands of rank-and-file officers are expected to protest his leadership outside police headquarters.
