Austin police to start carrying same guns
Next spring, all officers will likely have to retire their personal guns for a shiny new .40-caliber pistol

AUSTIN, Texas — Austin police officer Andy Pietrowski has carried the same 9 mm Smith & Wesson handgun for more than half of his 32-year career and considers it a "lifeline" and "like a best friend."
"It's part of me," Pietrowski said of the gun he started packing in the early 1990s. "You get used to it. It fits your hand, and you know its idiosyncrasies. If it jams, you know exactly what to do."
Next spring, Pietrowski likely will have to retire it for a shiny new .40-caliber pistol — a weapon that in coming months will reside in the holsters of each of the department's 1,600 officers.
