Two brothers allegedly attack campus officer

(MADISON, Wisc.) -- Two brothers from Verona were charged Friday with attacking a UW-Madison Police officer, one even trying to grab the officer's gun, as the officer attended to a traffic stop early Tuesday.

Patrick K. Matthews, 21, and his brother, Shawn, 24, were among four men who allegedly approached officer Michael Newton and attacked him after he stopped a car for a registration violation on West Johnson Street near Bassett Street.

Both were charged with battery to an officer and resisting arrest. Patrick Matthews was also charged with trying to disarm an officer.

According to a criminal complaint, as the four approached Newton, Patrick Matthews said: ''That is the (expletive) weasel who arrested me for DWI.'' After Newton told Patrick Matthews and the others to back away, the Matthews brothers attacked him, the complaint states, punching him in the eye and mouth.

Newton and Patrick Matthews ended up in a struggle on the ground, during which Patrick Matthews gripped Newton's gun, still secured in its holster. Patrick Matthews managed to loosen the snap securing the gun before Newton struck him with his flashlight on the arm and head to get him to let go of the gun, the complaint states.

Both were released Friday on signature bonds. Patrick Matthews faces up to 13 years and three months in prison, while Shawn Matthews faces up to 10 years and nine months in prison. Sexual assault charged

A Madison man was charged Friday with the first-degree sexual assault of a 9-year-old girl.

Anthony L. Dawson, 32, 2426 Allied Drive, allegedly woke the girl in her bedroom in early October and touched her, according to a criminal complaint. He left after she pushed him away, but returned and touched her again. Dawson told Fitchburg police he was too drunk to remember anything about that night, the complaint states.
