(ROSEVILLE, Calif.) -- Police are investigating into the shooting of a 30-year-old man who allegedly charged an officer with a knife yesterday.
Robert Aguilar was shot three times in the stomach after he refused to drop a knife he was holding, threatened to kill himself and then charged at an officer, authorities said.
"The subject was acting irrationally and was possibly under the influence (of drugs)," Capt. Joel Neves told the Sacramento Bee. "The officers tried to talk to him, but had difficulty."
One of the four officers who responded to the scene tried to subdue Aguilar with an electrical shock device.
"As the officer approached, he suddenly charged at the officer with the knife and two officers shot him," Neves told the Bee. The officers were unharmed.
Aguilar was taken to Sutter Roseville Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition.
Officials did not release the total number of shots that were fired.
As is standard policy, both officers have been placed on paid administrative leave, police said.
