Suspect shot allegedly attempting
to run down officers with his car

PoliceOne Staff Report
(TAMPA, Fla.) -- Officers critically wounded a suspected car thief on Sunday after he tried to run over police with his car, authorities said.

Tavaris Caldwell, 20, was taken to Tampa General Hospital on Dec. 2, where he was listed in critical condition.

Police standing on the roadside tried to pull Caldwell over for suspected car theft, but instead he drove by, narrowly missing them.

The two officers, whose names were not been released, fired on the fleeing suspect hitting him once in the upper chest and grazing his head with another bullet.

He was charged with resisting arrest with violence, grand theft of an auto and two counts of aggravated battery on a law officer.

This is the second time in a week that Caldwell has been arrested. A passenger in Caldwell's car was charged with drug offenses, according to the Associated Press.

On Nov. 28 he was charged with battery on a police officer and released on $23,500 bail, according to the AP.

The officers sustained minor injuries in the accident.
