Venue change in Georgia
death penalty trial of accused cop-killer
[Carroll County, GA]

PoliceOne Staff Report
(CARROLL COUNTY, Ga.) -- A Carroll County Superior Court judge has decided on a change of venue in the death penalty trial of the accused murderer of a Villa Rica police officer.

Jeffery McGee will stand trial Bishop in Stephens County in March for the killing of Officer Robbie Bishop, 35, who had a reputation for nabbing drug dealers on interstate highways. Bishop was found fatally shot on Jan. 20, 1999 in his police cruiser and the warning ticket the officer was filling out had McGee's name on it, police said. McGee was tracked down and arrested on Feb. 4, 1999

Pretrial publicity from last year prompted Judge Aubrey Duffey to change the location of the trial. Both defense attorney, Michael Mears and prosecutor Pete Skandalakis suggested counties, but yesterday Duffey decided on Stephen County based on courtroom availability.

Tocca, where the courthouse is located, is approximately 110 miles from Carroll County.

Duffey said that he would not sequester the jury.
