MIAMI — Miami Police Chief Miguel Exposito's job is safe for now, but only after two hours of political theater Thursday the likes of which have been missing at historic City Hall at Dinner Key for well over a decade.
As Exposito defended himself against an attempt to fire him by Commissioner Richard P. Dunn II, the close-to-capacity crowd in the chamber was treated to dueling videos, allegations that the mayor's son had tried to slime the police department, and cries of national embarrassment.
In the end, Dunn's request for Exposito to resign and his ceremonial call for a vote of no confidence failed. The mayor, also seeking the chief's ouster, promised to halt the rhetoric, and the chief, surrounded by a swarm of reporters, walked out of the chamber repeating, "No comment.''
