Detention center has special
place for law enforcement
[Pasadena, CA]

PoliceOne Staff Report
(PASADENA, Calif.) -- The Century Regional Detention Facility has a special place for law enforcement. It's not a break room or a gym -- it's a cellblock.

Sheriff's officials told the San Gabriel Valley Tribune that they've designated a special area in the prison to house up to 100 former officers and police family members -- two to a cell -- to separate them from the general prison population.

"It's not preferential treatment," sheriff's Sgt. Ron Fernstrom told the Tribune. "It's comparable to the separation we give to members of rival gangs. Our goal is simply to avoid violence."

Authorities would not discuss the unit's occupants citing security concerns.

Pasadena police Lt. Michael Korpal, who runs the city jail under the Pasadena police station, told the Tribune that he wasn't aware there's a special county jail unit just for ex-cops.

"It's a sad state of affairs," Korpal said.
