(NEWMAN, Western Australia) Four members of the Western Australia Police Service died when their small plane crashed as they returned from an investigation.

The dead included Senior Constable Donald Everett, 49, of Karratha, who was piloting the Cessna 310 Friday night. Everett who served with Air Support had been a police officer since 1972. Also killed were Constable Gavin Capes, 27, First Class Constable David Dewar, 31, and Senior Constable Phillip Ruland, all of Newman.

The four officers had been investigating a reported assault in Kiwirrikurra near the border with the Northern Territory.

Two officers who were waiting for the group at Newman Airport heard the plane lose power, followed by a loud bang. About 40 police officers and volunteers searched the area around the airport, locating the wreckage early Saturday.
