Sheriff's jailer dies after being hit by wrong-way driver on freeway

(HARRIS COUNTY, Texas) -- A sheriff 's jailer was killed late Sunday when his car was hit head-on by a van traveling the wrong way on the Katy Freeway, authorities said.

Jason Allen Hain, 26, of the 14900 block of Richmond, was on his way to work when the accident occurred at 9:45 p.m.

Harris County Sheriff's Department officials said Hain had worked for the department for about a year.

The driver of the van, Eric German Davila, 25, of the 300 block of Cody, was charged Monday with intoxication manslaughter. Davila remained in critical condition at Ben Taub Hospital, where he was under police guard.

Before the crash, a Houston police officer saw the van enter the Katy Freeway near downtown traveling into oncoming traffic. He put an alert on the police radio. Numerous callers also reported a vehicle traveling on the wrong side of the road, and a police helicopter was dispatched to try to locate the van.

However, before police could find it, the van collided head-on with the Honda Civic Hain was driving in the 4700 block of the Katy Freeway near North Durham. Hain died at the scene.
