Mayor charged with sodomy

(NIAGARA COUNTY, N.Y.) -- Donald H. Piedmont, a sheriff's deputy and outgoing mayor of Middleport, was arrested Friday on a first-degree sodomy charge, Investigator Raymond M. Degan said.
Piedmont, a 25-year veteran with the Sheriff's Department, pleaded not guilty to the charge before Town Justice Raymond Schilling on Friday night.
He was remanded to the Niagara County Jail in lieu of $ 100,000 bail, Degan said. Schilling granted him an adjournment until a court appearance here Wednesday.
Piedmont, 45, was arrested at 4:30 p.m. following an investigation into a complaint filed by a Town of Lockport woman relating to an alleged incident here last September. He was off-duty at the time of the alleged incident, Degan said.
Details about the incident were not disclosed.
Sheriff Thomas A. Beilein suspended Piedmont from his deputy's post pending the outcome of "all criminal charges." Information about whether he was suspended with or without pay was not available, Degan said.
Piedmont has been mayor of Middleport for the past six years after serving as a village trustee. Since he did not seek re-election this year, he leaves office on April 1. A Democrat, he ran under the banner of the People's Choice Party.
Village Trustee Julia A. Maedl is running unopposed for Piedmont's mayoral post in Tuesday's village election.
