(St. Louis, MO) - Even after 42 years on the St. Louis police force, Herbert Irvin Bosch Sr. had an insatiable craving for adventure.

After he retired, Mr. Bosch began sky diving and bicycling and he built his own houseboat. On his 80th birthday, he took his first voyage in a hot air balloon, and last year, at age 85, he was still leaping from the high dive at a community pool in St. Peters, said his daughter, Joan Dale of Morgan Hill, Calif.

Mr. Bosch, a retired sergeant with the St. Louis Police Department, died Sunday (March 18, 2001) of liver cancer and Alzheimer's disease at Garden View Care Center in O'Fallon, Mo. He was 86 and had lived in St. Charles.

Mr. Bosch joined the Coast Guard after high school. He served several years and was trained as a radio technician and radio operator.

In 1940, Mr. Bosch became a radio technician for the St. Louis Police Department and was promoted to supervisor of radio communications five years later.

In 1950, he became a police officer and served for a short time in the old Deer Street District before he was moved to the communications division at the headquarters, where he again worked as supervisor of radio communications. He was promoted to sergeant in 1956.

He retired in 1972 but remained with the department as a civilian communications specialist for 10 more years.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. today at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1355 Motherhead Road, Cottleville. Mr. Bosch donated his body to St. Louis University School of Medicine.

In addition to his daughter, survivors include his wife, Ruth L. Underkofler Bosch of St. Charles; a son, Thomas Bosch of St. Charles; two daughters, Janice Bouchard of Wildwood and Joyce Crangle of St. Charles; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 9374 Olive Boulevard, St. Louis, Mo. 63132.
