Thieves go for unlicensed tractors
[Madera, CA]

April 13, 2001
(MADERA, Calif.) - Authorities in California urges farmers and contractors to record the serial numbers of tractors, bulldozers and other heavy equipment to foil thieves.

Construction and farming vehicles not used on public roads do not have to be licensed or registered. Investigators say that can make the equipment difficult to trace and attracts thieves who use trucks and trailers to make off with items often worth thousands of dollars.

The Construction Industry Crime Prevention Program recommends keeping a record of all serial numbers, etching the numbers on unmarked components and uaing distinctive company logos on heavy equipment. Authorities say that fuel cutoffs and other anti-theft devices are also helpful.

The program has set up a 24-hour hotline at (800) 264-9254 and offers rewards for information leading to the recovery of stolen equipment or the arrest of suspected thieves.
