Fire chief charged with embezzling from bingo games
[Braddock, PA]

April 13, 2001
(PITTSBURGH) - The chief of a volunteer fire company in Braddock has been charged with skimming almost $24,000 from fundraising bingo games.

Investigators say that Thomas J. Petrovic was also treasurer and business manager of Braddock Volunteer Fire Co. No. 2 in 1999 and 2000 when the thefts allegedly occurred. He is also charged with using a department credit card to buy himself a computer.

A member of the fire company became suspicious when Petrovic, who was about to leave for vacation, told him to set aside $200 from every bingo game for payments to pay volunteers. He reported the practice to an Allegheny County detective.

Petrovic is a longtime member of the fire company, but his service was interrupted in the 1980s when he was sentenced to five years in federal prison for setting a warehouse fire. His brother, Robert, a former chief, is charged with conspiracy and with hindering the investigation.
