N.H. man killed after 3-day standoff
Man had been holed up with child, who was reportedly unhurt
MANCHESTER, N.H. — A New Hampshire man holed up in his apartment with a child during a dayslong standoff has been shot and killed by police, officials said Saturday
A state police officer shot and killed 50-year-old James Breton early Saturday during a standoff in Manchester, New Hampshire Attorney General Michael Delaney said in a statement. Neither a 7-year-old girl inside the apartment, identified as Breton's daughter, nor responding officers were hurt, Delaney said.
Officials did not immediately release the girl's name.
The standoff in the largest city in northern New England began Thursday night when police went to the building to check on the child's welfare. They say they were met by a man who waved a handgun, made threatening statements and barricaded himself in the apartment.
Officials said a number of attempts were made to coax Breton out of the apartment, but all failed.
Officials say officers tried to check on Breton and the girl Saturday morning. They say Breton reacted angrily and was armed with a handgun. A SWAT team officer fired on Breton, killing him.
Delaney said an investigation is continuing. He says an autopsy is scheduled for Monday to determine the exact cause and manner of Breton's death.
