Black officers’ group holds training session
[Miami, FL]

April 19, 2001
(MIAMI) -- The National Black Police Association is holding a training session for its southeast region in Miami.

On Wednesday, the group heard from a lawyer who is involved in lawsuits over racial profiling in Maryland and Oklahoma. The issue is also a hot one in Florida, where the Miami-Dade police have begun keeping records of the race of drivers subjected to traffic stops.

Organizers say the goal of the conferences is to educate black police officers on racial profiling and similar concerns and to discuss how to improve police service to minority communities. The NBPA's members include police officers, corrections officers and employees of federal and state law enforcement agencies.

The conference runs through Saturday at the Wyndham Miami Hotel.
