Peace Officers Memorial Day
[St. James, MO]

ST. JAMES - In observance of Peace Officers Memorial Day, a special community service will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 15th, at St. John Lutheran Church, 229 West James Boulevard in St. James, Missouri. The Rev. Paul E. Goddard, pastor of St. John and chaplain for the St. James Police Department, will lead the service.

Law enforcement officers from city, county, state, and federal agencies have been invited, and some from around the state have expressed plans to attend the observance. Area citizens are invited to take this opportunity to give thanks to God for those who stand ready to protect and serve us by enforcing the laws of our land.

Following the service, AAL Branch #3002 will hold a free dinner for the officers, their families, and the public. The dinner will include chicken and all the fixings, with Ruby’s ice cream for dessert. Reservations are requested to insure an ample supply of food. A number of door prizes, for both law enforcement officers and the public, will be awarded. The “Tiger Bounce”, a carnival type activity will be on hand for the children.

Peace Officers Memorial Day is the climax of Police Week, which is “a tribute to the men and women who, day and night, stand guard in our midst to protect us through enforcement of our laws, and to honor those who have lost their lives in service to the community.” This week-long observance was instituted in 1961, when President John F. Kennedy signed Public Law 87-54. Since then, Police Week has been observed each year in communities throughout our nation.

For additional information on the Peace Officers Memorial Day activities, or to place a reservation for the dinner, please call Pastor Goddard at 265-3167.
