DEKALB, Ga. — Information from a confidential informant led authorities to the arrest of accused cop shooter Michael Hughey in a hotel room Thursday morning.
Hughey, 37, had checked into a motel on Wednesday with apparent plans to stay for a period of time, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Police said when officers knocked on Hughey’s door, he did not resist. A team of DeKalb and Henry County police officers, assisted by the DeKalb sheriff’s Fugitive Squad and the U.S. Marshals office, quickly took him into custody.
Hughey shot and wounded Officer Deron Fulton on Tuesday when the officer tried to take him into custody after a traffic stop.
“We’re very happy to have him off the street,” White said. “He’s very dangerous. He shot at a police officer, which indicates that he’s willing to shoot at anyone.”
Hughey is charged with aggravated assault against a police officer, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
