Milestones: June 26, 2000

Milestones is a new feature of PoliceOne.com. In this section of the News, we will keep you up to date on major personnel changes, awards, non-line of duty deaths, and small items of interest relating to police officers across the country. For our first edition of Milestones, we have three items to report. First, our congratulations to Lieutenant Colonel W. Gerald Massengill, who has been named head of the Virginia State Police. Massengill had been acting superintendent since the resignation of Colonel M. Wayne Huggins.Congratulations, too, to several officers honored in St. Louis. This Tuesday, has been proclaimed Robert W. Flagg Day in honor of officer Flagg?s 20 years of service to the department. Three officers have also received purple hearts. They are Captain Robert Young, who was injured December, 1995, responding to a burglary in progress; Officer Tim Tanner, who was injured in 1998 in a fall and Officer Michael Reifschneider, who received a back injury in 1985. Officers Jeffrey Fuesting, Michael Youngblood, Bernard Widdis and Dispatcher Gary Decker also received commendations. Our sympathy to the families and friends of Robert ?Duke? Egan and Lieutenant Donald Ray Brooks. Egan, a 35-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department died of complications from a stroke at his Chicago home. His funeral will be in Chicago Monday. Brooks, a Lewisville, Texas, police lieutenant, died Tuesday of a heart attack. His funeral was Saturday.
