Police are still searching for a suspect in the shooting at a liquor store on the corner of Malcom X Boulevard and Halsey Street in Bedford-Stuyvesant.
Darryl Jones, 35, was shot in the back and later died at St. John's Hospital. Off-duty Captain Devon Ponds was shot in his side.
NYPD investigators say they want to question an unidentified man whose photo was captured on the liquor store's surveillance camera.
"We have one person we want to speak to, but we cannot say whether or not we have a witness at this time," Lt. Joseph Heffernan said Tuesday. "We have somebody we believe was in the area. What they were doing in the area we don't know, but we'd like to find out by talking to them."
Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly visited Ponds, a 14-year veteran Rikers Island guard, at Kings County Hospital, where he is listed in stable condition.
"He's got a great record," Bloomberg told reporters. "We joked about how quickly we want him back to work. With this budget crisis, he doesn't get a lot of days off. But seriously, he'll be in the hospital a few days, and then we hope he'll be released. We expect a full recovery. It'll take a little time."
Police recovered two guns at the scene, one owned by the correction officer.
