Police: Off-duty cop collars ice cream thief

An off-duty Quincy police officer waiting to pay for his groceries caught a shoplifter

QUINCY, Mass. — An off-duty Quincy police officer waiting to pay for his groceries caught a shoplifter trying to make it out of the Stop & Shop on Southern Artery with ice cream and stationery, police said.

The officer was in the checkout line at about 7:20 a.m. Monday when he saw a security guard attempting to stop a man from leaving the store, Lt. Jack Sullivan said. The officer caught up with the man in the parking lot.

Joshua Jones, 24, of 38 Shaw St., Quincy, was charged with shoplifting. He had attempted to steal Ben & Jerry's ice cream and stationery, Sullivan said.
