MAYWOOD, Ill. — A man has been charged in connection with an attack that ended with an off-duty police officer shooting and killing the father of girl who was hit by his motorcycle.
John Passley was charged with aggravated battery on a police officer and on a public way.
The incident began when the Chicago officer saw the girl in his path and purposely ditched his motorcycle Saturday night, The Chicago Sun-Times reported. The motorcycle skidded and struck the girl and Passley, her cousin, who had run into the street.
The father, Christopher Middleton, came out of a restaurant and began shouting at the officer, then struck him in the face, town spokesman Larry Shapiro said. He reportedly knocked the officer to the ground, continued to strike him and was joined by Passley, who kicked the officer.
The officer drew his gun and fired once at Middleton.
"He was about to lose consciousness to people beating him," Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden said. "He fired in defense of his life."
Middleton was later pronounced dead at Loyola University Medical Center. His daughter was treated for abrasions and contusions.
