Police commissioner defends force in NYC showdown
Officers confronted the suspect outside the Empire State Building as he attempted to slip away in a throng of pedestrians
Kelly on Monday called the shooting appropriate since the officers had just been told Jeffrey Johnson had killed a co-worker around the corner and Johnson was pointing his weapon at them. That assessment is supported by experts on police tactics and firepower.
Police say Johnson, a women's accessories designer, ambushed a vice president of the company that had laid him off. The officers confronted him as he attempted to slip away in a throng of pedestrians.
Nine civilians suffered nonlife-threatening injuries caused by police bullets. The patrolmen were placed on desk duty while prosecutors review their response.
