DETROIT — An army veteran was killed when he threw himself in front of a drive-by shooter taking aim at a young girl.

David Nelson, 28, was visiting neighbors on his childhood street when a man in a car fired shots at the girl, according to My Fox Detroit. Nelson pushed her out of the way and was struck and killed by gunfire.

Later that night, Detroit Police arrested the suspected shooter and charged him with first degree murder. A driver and a weapon are still being sought.

Nelson received a Purple Heart for his service in Iraq and Afghanistan. A vigil was held Thursday at his childhood home.
