Video: Zookeepers given police training to use riot shields against cranes
When the birds are territorial, their sharp beaks are a weapon against zoo staff
The birds have been leaving staff at Exmoor Zoo bruised and cut following the attacks that involve the birds grabbing at keepers with their razor-sharp beaks.
Lynn Reynolds, the commercial manager at the animal centre told how police were called in to train staff in how to use riot shields in order to control the unpredictable birds.
Lynn said: “They do come at us, they are big birds and they can really hurt you. They have really sharp beaks which they can stab you with in your legs and arms so you really have to be careful.”
