MANTECA, Calif. — Footage of an officer shooting a knife-yielding parolee 11 times outside a suburban home has been released a day after the officer was cleared of any wrongdoing.
Police say Officer James Moody opened fire after seeing that Ernesto Duenez was holding a knife as he exited his truck.
Police had been staking out at the house because Duenez was wanted in connection with a domestic-violence incident earlier that day, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
Moody yelled at Duenez, the passenger in the truck, to put his hands up. Before opening fire, the officer can be heard on the footage yelling, "Drop the knife now!" and, "Hands up! Hands up, Ernie! Don't you move, Ernie, don't you move or I'll shoot you!"
Moody, who has been on the department for 12 years, told investigators that he had seen a knife in Duenez's right hand and believed the suspect might charge him or throw it at him.
San Joaquin County district attorney's office ruled Tuesday that Moody had been legally justified in shooting Duenez.
