LOS ANGELES — Riverside Police Chief Sergio Diaz told a news conference Thursday the department is still in disbelief over the shooting of two officers.

Chief Diaz went on to tell reporters that the accused mass-murderer, Christopher Dorner, will be found.

He identified the officer killed as a 34-year-old training officer and an 11-year veteran of the department. He was ambushed while riding in the patrol car with a 27-year-old officer trainee.

“We’re still waiting to wake up from this nightmare,” Diaz said. “This doesn’t get easier.”

The search for Dorner, who was fired from the LAPD in 2008 for making false statements, began after he was linked to a weekend killing in which one of the victims was the daughter of a former police captain who had represented him during the disciplinary hearing.

Authorities believe Dorner opened fire early Thursday on police in cities east of Los Angeles, killing an officer and wounding another.
