CHICAGO — A 53-year-old man with an extensive criminal history was charged Thursday in connection with the armed attack on a Logan Square store owner that was captured on surveillance video.
Meanwhile, the owner who fought back with a baseball bat despite being shot in the upper right leg was recuperating at home after his release from a hospital. Luis Quizhpe said he hoped the quick arrest after the Tuesday afternoon robbery would act as a deterrent. The video shows the gunman repeatedly shooting at Quizhpe at close range, but the owner was struck just once. As the accomplice jumped over the counter to hit the security buzzer in order to flee out the door, Quizhpe repeatedly struck him with a baseball bat. Aucaquizhpe chased the robbers out of the store with a fire extinguisher.
Cornell Mack was arrested Tuesday evening at Stroger Hospital with a gunshot wound in his abdomen. He claimed he had been shot on the South Side, but Chicago police allege he was accidentally wounded by the second suspect, who remained at large Thursday. Judge Laura Sullivan set bail at $750,000 for Mack on charges of attempted first-degree murder, armed robbery and discharge of a firearm.
