A car hit a Comal County Sheriff’s Office deputy Monday morning while he was clearing debris from the road.

The driver was a doctor and was able to provide immediate care to Deputy Shawn Seesengood, 27, who was in critical condition as of 5:30 p.m. Monday.

Dispatchers received a call at 5:52 a.m. reporting a wooden box in the middle of the road on Farm-to-Market 306, five miles east of 281 on the north side of Canyon Lake.

Several cars had already hit the box by the time Seesengood arrived on the scene at 6:07 a.m.

“I guess there were pieces after that. And he may have been attempting to remove the pieces from the road,” said Corporal Tim Kolbe of the Comal County Sheriff’s Office.

The lights on the deputy’s patrol car were on.

“He was hit in the legs and flew into the windshield of the car,” Kolbe said.

Seesengood’s legs were fractured and his ribs were broken.

The doctor who hit him gave immediate emergency care to the deputy and Bulverde/Spring Branch EMS was in route at 6:14 a.m. and on the scene by 6:22 a.m.

Two nurses also were on the scene.

“We have a lot of medical folks out there that may work in San Antonio, and they commute and it’s not unusual to see a lot of medical people driving back and forth down the road,” Kolbe said.

No details on the doctor who hit Seesengood were available from the sheriff’s office, but no charges are pending in the accident.

Bulverde/Spring Branch EMS transported Seesengood to Kestrel Air Park north of Texas 46 on Highway 281 where he was airlifted to University Hospital.

Seesengood underwent emergency surgery to stop internal bleeding. During surgery his spleen was removed.

“Because of contusions to his lungs, he is on a ventilator,” Kolbe said.

Though in critical condition, as of 1:30 p.m. Seesengood was “conscious and responsive,” Kolbe said.

Seesengood had been on patrol for four months. Before then, he worked as a detention officer.
