Two Officers Killed on Same Day

FERRY COUNTY, Wash.- Two law enforcement officers tragically lost their lives on May 30 on opposite sides of the country.

Undersheriff Matt Lane, 41, of Ferry County, Wash. was killed in an airplane accident, along with the civilian pilot who was helping in the effort to find a missing woman.

Later in the afternoon the woman walked out of the woods in the same area she was reported missing.

Lane had been with the Ferry County Sheriff's Department in Washington State for 13 years.

Trooper Anthony G. Cogdill, of Buncombe County, N.C. was killed when his cruiser was struck by a tractor-trailer.

Cogdill was conducting a traffic stop when his cruiser was struck by the truck and pushed 100 yards.

The person he was stopped was also injured.

Cogdill is survived by his wife and young son.

He had been with the North Carolina Highway Patrol for six years. Before that he served with the Buncombe County Sheriff's Office for three years.
