Off-Duty Cop's Son Accidentally Kills Her, Wounds Himself

Officer Down: Roberto Jackson - [Chicago, Illinois]

Chicago Sun-Times

A 52-year-old off-duty police officer was accidentally shot to death Wednesday morning by her 26-year-old mentally ill son, police said.

The officer, Roberto Jackson, had gone with other family members about 10 a.m. to the 1600 block of North Mobile, where her son was running in front of cars, according to police spokesman Matthew Jackson.

The spokesman said it appeared the son was trying to get hit by a car.

Roberto Jackson, a 22-year veteran, was a patrol officer from the Harrison District, police said.

Jackson approached her son from behind and tried to hug him in an attempt to calm him down, the police spokesman said.

About that time, the son shot himself in the chest with a TEC-9, a semiautomatic pistol, Matthew Jackson said.

"The bullet [went] through him and struck her," he said.

The mother was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where she died, police said.

The son, whose name was not released, was in critical condition at Stroger Hospital of Cook County, police said.

Hospital officials couldn't confirm his condition Wednesday evening.

Family and neighbors of Roberto Jackson refused to comment on the incident Wednesday evening.
