Active duty National Guardsman/State Trooper Killed in Accident

Officer Down: Anthony Campbell - [Exmore, Virginia]

A Virginia state trooper who was on active duty with the Virginia National Guard was killed in a four-car accident on the Eastern Shore.

Anthony Darryl Campbell, of Exmore, died shortly after the Friday night crash, and his 8-year-old son was seriously injured. His son was airlifted to Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters in Norfolk with a severe head injury.

The boy was in critical condition Saturday.

Campbell's wife, was not seriously injured. Carr said she was being treated at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

Carr said the accident was caused by 55-year-old Larrie Taylor, who was driving drunk and hit the car in front of him, starting a chain reaction. The accident occurred around 10 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. Route 13 and Business Route 13.

Carr said the Campbells were wearing their seat belts.

Campbell was detached from the Virginia State Police while he was serving with the National Guard. He was on leave from Fort A.P. Hill visiting family on the Eastern Shore.

Taylor, was charged with manslaughter and driving while under the influence. He was treated at the hospital and arrested upon release.
