A Batesburg-Leesville, N.C. police officer was shot Monday evening while trying to serve an arrest warrant and is in critical condition in a Columbia hospital.
Police have not been able to take a suspect into custody.
"We've been trying to get this man out of the house," State Law Enforcement Division Chief Robert Stewart said. Officer Leroy Williams was shot once, Lexington County Sheriff's Department Capt. John Allard said. Capt. Allard did not know the officer's age.
Officer Williams and two other officers were attempting to serve an arrest warrant on Samuel Padgett, 25, at about 5 p.m. when the shooting happened, Capt. Allard said.
