Tex. Officer Killed in Crash; Motorcycle Rear-Ends SUV

Officer Down: James O'Brien - [Temple, Texas]

A Temple, Texas police officer, James O'Brien, 38, was killed after his Harley-Davidson motorcycle rear-ended a 1997 Ford Explorer about 4:25 p.m. Friday near Wildcat Stadium, at North 31st Street and West Calhoun Avenue.

Both the motorcycle and the Explorer were northbound on 31st Street. At the time of impact, the Explorer was preparing to make a left turn onto Calhoun, said Lt. Edward Best of Temple police.

A man and woman in the car were treated and released at the scene. O'Brien was pronounced dead at Scott and White Hospital by Justice of the Peace Eddy Lange of Temple at 4:54 p.m.

Lange said O'Brien suffered massive head injuries and that no autopsy was ordered.

"It was a tragic death," Lange said.

O'Brien joined the Temple Police Department in 1996 and had been a motorcycle officer in the traffic unit since 1999.
