N.Y. State Trooper Killed in Vehicle Crash
Officer Down: Jeffrey T. Edelson - [Liberty, New York]
LIBERTY, N.Y. (AP) -- The cause of a crash that killed a 34-year-old state trooper was being investigated Monday.
Trooper Jeffrey T. Edelson was killed Sunday while on patrol after his car crashed into a tree.
Edelson was answering a criminal mischief complaint at about 1:10 p.m. near this Catskill-area town when a dark-colored pickup truck sped by in the other direction.
Witnesses said that Edelson made a U-turn on Route 55 in an apparent attempt to catch up to the truck, but lost control of his cruiser on a downhill curve and went off the road, said Maj. Alan Martin.
Martin said investigators were reconstructing the accident Monday, but that glare from the sun could have been a factor.
"Right now, it looks likely that he was going too fast for the conditions," he said.
Edelson, a six-year veteran, was not married, according to state police.
Troopers were trying to track down the dark-colored pickup truck Monday.
Liberty is about 90 miles northwest of New York City.
