State Trooper Killed in Crash

Officer Down: Trooper Jeffry T. Edelson - [New York State Police, New York]

November 24, 2003

LIBERTY, N.Y. -- The cause of a crash that killed a 34-year-old state trooper was being investigated Monday.

Trooper Jeffry T. Edelson was killed Sunday while on patrol after his car crashed into a tree.

Edelson, a six-year veteran, was not married, according to state police. His parents, Steven and Ellen Edelson, live in Brookville.

Edelson was answering a criminal mischief complaint at about 1:10 p.m. near this Catskill-area town when a dark-colored pickup truck sped by in the other direction.

Witnesses said that Edelson made a U-turn on Route 55 in an apparent attempt to catch up to the truck, but lost control of his cruiser on a downhill curve and went off the road, said Maj. Alan Martin.

Martin said investigators were reconstructing the accident Monday, but that glare from the sun could have been a factor.

"Right now, it looks likely that he was going too fast for the conditions," he said.

Gov. George Pataki said Edelson "dedicated himself to protecting the lives of New Yorkers."

"His death is a painful reminder of how our law enforcement officials fulfill their sworn duty with courage and sacrifice," Pataki said.

Troopers were trying to track down the dark-colored pickup truck Monday.

Liberty is about 90 miles northwest of New York City.
