KENAI, Alaska (AP) -- A Kenai police officer was fatally shot responding to a call for a welfare check on a citizen, Alaska State Troopers said.

Officer John Watson, 43, died at the scene, troopers said.

David Forster, 33, of Kenai was taken into custody after a standoff. He was booked into the Wildwood Pre-Trial Facility on charges of first-degree murder and first-degree assault, said a booking officer in Kenai.

The shooting occurred at about 8:20 p.m. Thursday. Alaska State Troopers and the Soldotna Police Department had asked for help in locating a vehicle. Watson found the vehicle in a Kenai subdivision.

Watson had been a member of the Kenai force since 1985, trooper spokesman Greg Wilkinson said.

The Alaska Bureau of Investigation is conducting the investigation.

Additional details were not immediately available.
