Indy Deputy Dies After Crash, Rollover in Creek

Officer Down: Jim Baugh - [Greencastle, Indiana]

Greencastle, Ind. -- A police squad car skidded off a highway and flipped into a creek Friday, fatally trapping a Putnam County sheriff's deputy under water for about 15 minutes, police said.

Capt. Jim Baugh, 62, was taken to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, where he died about five hours after the 4:30 p.m. wreck, Sheriff Mark Frisbie said.

Baugh, a former Putnam County sheriff who was to retire in April after more than 30 years with the department, was on his way to a minor traffic accident when his car went off U.S. 231 and into Big Walnut Creek a few miles north of Greencastle.

It took rescue workers several minutes to free Baugh from the squad car, which was upside down in the creek about 30 miles east of Terre Haute.

Baugh is survived by his wife, Laura Lee, and two sons, Jason and Jerrod, Frisbie said.
