Officer Down: Gregory Goff - [New York, New York]

NEW YORK (AP) -- Two men fired gunshots into a nightclub crowd early Saturday, killing an off-duty city corrections officer and injuring three other people, police said.

Police estimated 100 to 200 people were in the Lebanon Lodge in Queens when the gunfire began about 3 a.m., soon after two men had gotten into a fight over a woman.

One of the men involved in the fight made his way to the exit, pulled out a 9 mm gun and began firing into the crowd, police said.

The gunman dropped the weapon when he was struck in the head with a bottle, authorities said, but another man then picked up the gun and kept shooting. Fifteen shots were fired, police said.

Both gunmen fled, but police said the first shooter was being held for questioning Saturday afternoon.

Police said Gregory Goff, 24, was shot in the torso and later died at Mary Immaculate Hospital.

Police said Goff, who worked at a detention facility on Rikers Island, had his service weapon on him, but they do not believe he fired it.

Two men and a woman who were shot were in stable condition. Police said they don't believe any of those shot were the intended targets.
