East Texas officer shot in traffic stop dies
An East Texas police officer who was shot in the face and back during a traffic stop over the weekend died Sunday night at Houston's Memorial Hermann Hospital.
Huntington police officer John Logan, 33, was critically wounded Saturday during a traffic stop in Angelina County.
Logan died shortly before 7 p.m. Sunday, hospital spokesman David Mendel said today.
The man believed responsible for the shooting, Sashi Roberts, 24, fled police and was later found at a mobile home in Nacogdoches. After a two-hour standoff, Roberts shot himself. He was found in a bedroom within the mobile home with a suicide note nearby, said Nacogdoches County Sheriff Thomas Kerss.
Angelina County Sheriff Kent Henson said Logan was a "very dedicated" officer.
"He tried every way in the world to help (Roberts) ... having dispatch checking stuff to try to clear the guy," who was wanted on a felony charge, Henson said in Monday's editions of The Daily Sentinel.
The sheriff said the shooting occurred after Logan told Henson he was going to have to go to jail.
Logan, who had been with the police department for three years, is survived by his wife and three children.
