Kan. officer's gun belt a real life saver

WICHITA, Kan. — Training took over for Wichita police officer Jason Kimminau when a 23-year-old man jumped from a bridge into the rain-swollen Arkansas River.

Kimminau ran toward the river, tossing his wallet and radio to the ground before plunging in.

Kimminau said the weight of his gun belt kept him steady in the flowing water as he hooked his foot on a large rock and offered his arm to the man.

As soon as the man grabbed his arm, the current pulled Kimminau's foot loose. But they were close enough to shore that officers Alinda Piner and Christopher Welsh were able to pull them to safety.

After the rescue Tuesday evening, the man was treated and sent for a psychiatric evaluation.
