INDIANAPOLIS — Loved ones rejoiced when they heard the first words Patrolman Jason Fishburn spoke from his rehabilitation center bed on Monday, his father said.

"Oh my God. Oh my God," Fishburn, 29, said, his first words since he was shot in the head by a fleeing murder suspect on July 10.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan police officer turned to his wife and said "I love you."

"It almost took me back to the day he was born," said Dennis Fishburn, Jason's father. "When he said those words my heart was full of joy."

Dennis Fishburn, a metropolitan police sergeant, thanked the community for an outpouring of prayer and financial support. One fundraiser, the sales of T-Shirts reading "prayers for Fish," raised more than $45,000 to help support Fishburn's recovery.

Fishburn is talking, answering questions, reciting the alphabet and counting.

He has told his family "I want to fish." Dennis Fishburn believes his son was responding to a visiting uncle who promised to take him fishing when he recovers.

An aunt asked: "How do you like your room here?"

"Not so much," Fishburn answered.

The family declined to reveal the location of the rehab facility where Fishburn continues his recovery.
