P-1 Update: Another milestone on the come-back trail for amputee trooper

Trooper Matt Swartz, featured in a recent PoliceOne story about his courageous fight to return to full duty with the NY State Police after a leg amputation, has won another victory.
Last week [8/6/06] Swartz placed second in the below-knee amputation division of the annual Hope & Possibility Five-Mile Race, sponsored by the Achilles Track Club in New York City. The five-mile challenge for charity, which wound through Central Park, attracted some 3,400 runners, most of them disabled.
Swartz, 34, finished the race, which included a steep uphill stretch at about the three-mile mark, in 50 minutes 28 seconds. The division winner was a 19-year-old who clocked the course at 23:52.
Swartz, a Desert Storm vet, ran with a group of about 60 Iraq-war veterans called the Freedom Team. After he crossed the finish line, he still "had enough juice left" to return to the race course and run alongside other team members, cheering them "to pump it up and struggle for a strong finish," he told PoliceOne.
Medical studies have shown that an amputee with an average below-knee loss has to expend 25% more energy than a nondisabled runner, Swartz says. So how does he feel finishing the longest and toughest running challenge since his amputation less than two years ago? "Awesome!" he says.
For details of Swartz remarkable return to the road after a near-fatal auto accident cost him much of his left leg, read "We never thought you could come back"
