LUMBERTON, N.C. — An officer was fatally shot Tuesday while trying to arrest a man wanted for homicide.

Lumberton Officer Jeremiah Goodson was off duty around 11 a.m. when he recognized the suspect outside a gas station, NBC 17 reported. Goodson immediately called officers to inform them of the suspect's location.

A second officer arrived on scene, and the two walked to the vehicle containing the suspect. The man opened fire from inside the vehicle, striking Goodson in the chest.
