BIG LAKE, Texas — A Texas deputy was shot and killed Wednesday night, with the suspect barricading himself in a house for several hours before being arrested.
NewsWest 9 reported officers were searching for a suspect in Big Lake at around 6 p.m. He was located near the 1100 block of Main Street when Deputy Josh Mitchell, 26, was shot.
He had been with the department for at least eight years and reportedly died of his injuries while being transported to Reagan Memorial Hospital. He is survived by his wife, parents, siblings, and grandmother.
The suspect in the shooting had barricaded himself in a home in Big Lake, Reagan County Sheriff Jeff Garner told local reporters.
Garner said that the standoff began shortly after Mitchell was shot and continued through the night.
Late morning Thursday, police said they had arrested the suspect, who was identified as Marcus Madison, 43. He is being treated at the hospital for a wound to his face.
A SWAT team from Midland was reportedly dispatched to Big Lake to assist in the standoff. Big Lake is a town of about 2,900 people, located 70 miles southeast of Midland and about 240 miles northwest of San Antonio.
