AVON, Ohio — Dash-cam video from an Avon (Ohio) squad captured an heroic act by one officer whose intention to pull a suspect from behind the steering wheel was quickly replaced by the mission of pulling the man’s tiny son to safety instead.
Avon Police were dispatched to a store on a theft-in-progress call at about 1530 hours on Tuesday afternoon. Officers were told upon arrival that “a Hispanic male suspect left the store with stolen merchandise,” according to WKYC.
Officers were reportedly told that the subject “had a baby with him and had thrown the young child into his car before speeding away.”
Following numerous citizen reports of reckless driving, officers spotted 30-year-old Jose Rodriguez blowing a traffic signal, missing several cars.
Officers began pursuit but soon thereafter the subject again tried to drive through a stop signal, this time colliding with at least one other vehicle before coming to a stop on the sidewalk.
The baby was reportedly transported to Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital — his injuries are said to be not life-threatening.
The suspect faces a variety of charges, most notably child endangering.
