SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — Detective Sgt. Loran "Butch" Baker had a sense of humor but also a sense of compassion, once telling another officer to hand over his shirt to a trial witness who was dressed in ratty clothes so the man could look presentable in court.
Detective Elizabeth Butler was proud to be a female officer in a male-dominated profession, and passionately believed that crime victims should have a voice.
