SPALDING COUNTY, Ga. — Channel 2 Action News crews are at a Spalding County Waffle House, where authorities say a Griffin police officer was shot and killed Saturday morning.
Three suspects are in custody after the shooting that happened at the restaurant at U.S. 19 around 2:30 a.m.
Police said 43-year-old Griffin Police Officer Kevin Jordan, a 4-year veteran of the force and father of seven, was shot and killed.
Police said a group of two men and a woman was asked to leave the restaurant. Jordan, who was working an off-duty security job in full uniform, was able to get them outside. At some point, the woman began fighting with Jordan, police said.
"As he was on the ground trying to cuff her, one of the males who was with her apparently brandished a firearm and shot (Jordan) three times in the back," said Griffin Police Officer Mike Richardson.
Police said the bullets went straight through Jordan's bullet-proof vest. Jordan's brother, who had come to the Waffle House to meet with him, was in the parking lot. The officer's brother shot the suspect, identified as 30-year-old Michael Bowman, of Griffin. Police said Jordan's brother is a civilian, but has a permit to carry a gun.
Bowman was taken to a hospital. Police have not released the names of the other suspects in custody.
