STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — An off-duty police officer and his father — an off-duty firefighter — rescued their next door neighbor from a deadly blaze Monday.

According to SIlive, the massive all-hands fire grew to the second floor of the home when Officer Brian Grant and his father Bill grabbed a ladder and pulled the home owner, Mary Ann Sorenson, from the second story.

All three suffered injuries and were taken to the hospital after the ladder gave out on the way back down.

The Grants are being treated for minor burns and a possible broken bone, according to the report. The status of Sorenson is not known.

Rescuers also managed to save seven of what is believed to be as many as 30 cats and one dog that were inside the home at the time of the fire.

Five firefighters were also injured in the incident.

"I was terrified. I thought [the fire] was going to come to our house, but my brother and my dad were really brave," Amanda Grant told SIlive.
