Across the country, many law enforcement positions have been eliminated. Empty positions that haven’t been eliminated are left unfilled once vacated by retiring officers. Cops have been laid off in large numbers. Some smaller towns have completely eliminated their PD as a “luxury” they “can’t afford.”

Meanwhile, in Atlanta, the opposite is happening. If that department continues its pace of hiring, the force may reach its goal of 2,000 officers by the end of 2012
